“Miki,” she said, her voice failing.

Feeling lightheaded, she leaned into the sink. She cried as Miki took the knife out of her stomach. Blood poured out of her mouth. He took a step closer and yanked her hair, raising her face to look up at him. “I’m not done with you yet. You won’t die an easy death.”

  “Why?”

He smirked, hatred in his eyes. “It’ll take more than a day to get everything out. There are so many things I need to stay to you.”

Finia winced in agony. She spun around and grabbed the knife in the sink. Trembling, she took hold of it.

From behind, Miki knocked it out of her hand. “You didn’t really think I’d make this easy for you, did you? Don’t be so stupid.” He raised the knife, yanked her arm around so the palm of her hand was visible and slit it. She cried out in pain.

He stepped back. She turned to face him. He waved the knife back and forth in front of his face as though he was teasing her. What had she done to deserve this? Miki was truly crazy, and if she didn’t think of something fast, she’d be dead. Jahlin couldn’t live with a psycho. She had to survive the night for him.

Miki studied her like he was testing her flight or fight response. She was too weak to even attempt fighting him. She was losing too much blood; her hands covered her stab wound. She took deep breaths, trying not to pass out. She needed to try and run out of there. Her cell phone was upstairs, too far away to call for help.

She struggled but limped to the front door. When her hand reached the doorknob, Miki yanked her hair, pulling her head back, then forcibly slammed her head into the front door. She was losing consciousness.

He whispered in her ear, “I said this won’t be easy for you. Why won’t you listen?”

  “Please stop.”

He slammed her head again. “Make me.” He turned her around and squeezed her neck. She gasped for air. Her legs kicked from under her as she scratched at Miki’s hands. He didn’t even flinch. “I hate this door. Do you know how many times you shut it in my face? Do you?”

Finia coughed, her body convulsing. If only he’d keep screaming, then maybe the neighbors would hear, and they might call for help. But, she didn’t have time to wait for that miracle. She had to do something, and she had to do it fast. She poked two fingernails into his eye sockets. He winced in pain, backing up from her and rubbing his eyes, blinking rapidly. She turned the doorknob and fled outside, rubbing her neck, trying to stop the pain. Blood smeared all over her skin and clothes. She tried to scream “help me” but her vocal chords were damaged.

She didn’t have her car keys, so she couldn’t drive away. Her focus stayed on the neighbor’s home right across the street. Their cars were in the driveway. Her right foot wobbled shakily in front of her left foot. She tried for steady pacing, but the pain wouldn’t allow her to go any faster. She whimpered when she heard Miki’s footsteps running off the porch.

“Why do you keep leaving me, Finia? Don’t you know how much I love you?”

He caught up to Finia, walking at a steady pace beside her. He reached over and put a strand of hair behind her ear and caressed her face. What a sick, cocky bastard. Why had she stayed silent and protected him all these years? Why did she allow this obsessive asshole to stay in her life?

“Let’s make a deal. Stop running. Come inside, then I’ll tell you where our son is.” He frowned in a mocking way. “I’m sorry, where Jahlin is. That’s the only way you know how to acknowledge him, right?”

Finia stopped in her tracks. Jahlin. Oh no, what did this crazy bastard do? “Where is he?”

“Come inside, then I’ll tell you.” He grabbed her hand. Finia’s body trembled, but she allowed him to escort her back towards the house. She needed answers.

A car door shut in the distance. She heard her cousin Laura shout, “Hey, what’s going on here? Finia, are you all right?”

Finia coughed up blood. Miki stopped walking and sighed. He raised the knife, turning around to face Laura. “I like you Laura, but you have to mind your own fucking business. Let me deal with my family in my way.”

Finia slowly glanced at her cousin. Her body was swaying back and forth even though Miki held her by the arm.

Wide-eyed, her cousin talked into her cell phone. “Get here quick. She’s losing a lot of blood.” She put her phone in her shirt pocket. “Let her go.”

“That’s the whole problem. I can’t,” Miki said, a hint of desperation and stubbornness in his voice.

“Please think about what you’re doing. You don’t want to do this.”

  “Yes, I do.”

Laura screamed, “Help! Help! Finia needs help!”

Too weak, Finia’s head hung low. She felt ashamed that her cousin had to witness this. None of this would have happened if Finia had spoken up sooner. Now, her cousin’s life was in danger, and Finia was too weak to fight back.

Neighbors stepped out onto their porches. A couple men even had baseball bats. They ran into the yard. Now, a crowd formed a circle around them.

Miki stepped behind her and grabbed her waist, pointing the tip of the knife right at her throat. “If something happens to me, then you’ll never know where Jahlin is. Remember that, bitch.”

“Jahlin…where’s Jahlin?” She managed to let out a raspy whisper. Darkness engulfed Finia’s vision when her eyes rolled in the back of her head. She couldn’t see, but she felt the knife slice through her throat slowly, stinging like a thirty-hour tattoo.

  What happened to Jahlin?

  Now, she’d never know…

  Epilogue

The police station was bombarded with phone calls from the media, demanding answers on what had happened that night. Detective Remy wondered if a full moon was the cause of the constant craziness surrounding his small town.

A heroin lab had exploded in an apartment complex near the high school.

Road rage had led to a fatal shooting.

A young boy had been found floating in the lake.

And, a disturbed man had killed his ex-girlfriend.

What else could happen? He stood up from his desk and roved the jail cells. It was too quiet. Once he reached Miki’s cell, Detective Remy turned his head and began gagging. He ran to the cell, his hands jiggling the keys. He hurriedly unlocked the door and checked Miki’s pulse.

  Nothing.

Miki was dead, hung by his shoe laces.

Detective Remy stepped away from the body and examined the wall. In Miki’s blood were the written words: She made me do it.
